Struggling with Poor Sleep, Snoring, or Daytime Fatigue?
You don’t have to live in constant exhaustion. If you’re lying awake at night, waking up drained, or being told by your partner about your snoring, know that you’re not alone. Thousands of Albertans and NWT residents have already found relief through The Sleep Institute and you can too.
At The Sleep Institute, we provide comprehensive sleep assessments for conditions such as sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, and snoring. Our physician-led evaluations include home sleep testing, CPAP trials, and CBTi therapy, with most services fully covered by Alberta and NWT Health. To make your care seamless, we also work closely with your family doctor to ensure every step is coordinated and supported.
How It Works: Our 4-Step Sleep Care Journey

Step 1: Self-Refer or Ask Your Doctor
You can begin your sleep care journey today — no referral needed. Simply complete our quick and easy online self-referral form right here on our website.
Your physician can also fax a referral or contact us directly to coordinate your care.

Step 2: Sleep Screening Questionnaire
After your self-referral, we’ll ask you a few simple questions to understand what your nights really feel like. From there, we can pinpoint whether your tired mornings are caused by sleep apnea, insomnia, or another condition and finally get you the answers you’ve been looking for.
1. Low-High Risk Assessment for Sleep Apnea
If your screening suggests a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), we’ll schedule you for a Level 3 home sleep study, a non-invasive, overnight test performed in the comfort of your home.
Once results are reviewed by a Sleep Specialist and, if you have sleep apnea, you may:
- Begin a CPAP trial to assess your response and comfort level with therapy
- Explore other treatment options like oral appliance therapy or positional therapy, depending on your sleep study results
We’ll guide you every step of the way — from interpreting your test results to selecting the most effective treatment for long-term improvement. All patients will have the opportunity to consult with a Certified Sleep Specialist Physician to ensure you have your care optimized.
2. Unclear Risk or No Sleep Apnea
If your results don’t clearly indicate sleep apnea, don’t worry, our comprehensive sleep team has you covered to rule out other sleep conditions. You’ll meet with a Sleep Physician for a thorough consultation. This clinical evaluation is essential for:
- Exploring underlying causes of poor sleep, fatigue, or snoring
- Recommending additional testing if needed (e.g., Level 1 in-lab study)
- Determining the best next steps for diagnosis and personalized treatment
Proper diagnosis is crucial to ensure you receive the right therapy, whether that’s CBTi for insomnia, sleep hygiene coaching, or further testing. TSI’s difference is that all patients will have the opportunity to consult with a Certified Sleep Specialist Physician.
3. Inconclusive Results
Even if your screening suggests inconclusive results for sleep apnea, we don’t dismiss your symptoms. You’ll still consult with a Sleep Specialist to:
- Investigate other root causes of sleep disturbance like insomnia, anxiety, or restless legs syndrome
- Review lifestyle, medication, and behavioral factors that may be affecting your sleep
- Develop a care plan that could include CBTi, further monitoring, or lifestyle changes
Every patient’s sleep journey is unique, and we’re here to support yours with evidence-based care and compassionate guidance.

Step 3: Meet with a Sleep Specialist
You’ll meet with a caring Sleep Specialist who listens to your story, reviews your results, and helps you understand what’s really going on. Together, you’ll explore the best path forward, whether that’s therapy, lifestyle changes, or simple adjustments to your nightly routine.

Step 4: Begin Your Personalized Treatment Plan
Based on your diagnosis, we’ll create a customized care plan to address conditions like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), chronic insomnia, restless sleep, and daytime fatigue.
Your treatment plan may include:
- CPAP therapy includes professional mask fitting and a no-obligation trial
- CBTi (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) a proven, non-medication approach to treating insomnia
- Oral/Dental appliance therapy an alternative to CPAP for certain types of sleep apnea
- Prescription sleep aids or medication, if clinically appropriate
CPAP Trials: You only pay for the mask and hose. If you continue with therapy, these costs are credited toward your CPAP machine purchase. We’ll help with insurance paperwork, equipment setup, and ongoing support to ensure your success.

Are sleep services covered by Alberta or NWT Health?
Yes. Many core services — including sleep specialist consultations, CBTi (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia), and Level 3 home sleep testing — are fully covered by Alberta Health Services and NWT Health. Our team will help you understand what’s included and explore additional insurance options if needed.
What is a CPAP trial, and how does it work?
A CPAP trial allows you to test CPAP therapy before committing to a full machine purchase.
