Uncover the answers behind your sleepless nights and exhausting days.
A Level 1 Sleep Study is the most comprehensive way to understand why your nights feel restless and your mornings feel drained. Guided overnight by a Sleep Physician, this gold-standard test reveals the root cause of complex or unclear sleep disorders. With The Sleep Institute, your care is led entirely by a board-certified Sleep Specialist Physician from the first appointment through diagnosis and treatment. No referral is needed and you do not have to wait.
Unlike many clinics that only provide test results, we guide you through the entire process. That means scheduling your test at the right time, interpreting the results with precision, and creating a clear treatment plan so you can finally move forward with confidence.

What Is a Level 1 Sleep Study?
Think of it as a night of answers. While you sleep, advanced sensors gently track your brain activity, breathing, heart function, oxygen levels, muscle activity, and more. The study is safe, painless, and the most accurate way to uncover what is standing between you and restorative rest.
A Level 1 Sleep Study is especially recommended when:
- A home sleep study (Level 3) is inconclusive
- Symptoms point to multiple or complex sleep disorders
- There are signs of movement disorders, seizures, or non-respiratory issues
- A previous CPAP trial has failed or needs more in-depth review

What to Expect During Your Overnight Sleep Test?
Your Level 1 polysomnogram will take place at the Centre for Sleep & Human Performance, where you’ll be attended by a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist. Set-up takes about one hour. You’ll be monitored throughout the night with:
- 10-lead EEG to track brainwaves, sleep stages, and arousals
- 2-lead EOG to measure eye movements
- 2-lead ECG to track heart rate and rhythm
- 2-lead EMG on the legs to identify movement disorders (e.g., restless legs syndrome)
- Nasal cannula/thermistor to measure airflow from the nose and mouth
- Chest and abdominal belts to measure respiratory effort
- Pulse oximeter to track oxygen levels (applied to finger or toe)
Important Note: Nail polish or artificial nails must be removed for accurate oximeter readings.

After Your Study
Once your study is complete:
- Data is scored by a technologist and reviewed by your Sleep Physician
- A diagnostic report is prepared within 2–6 weeks
- You'll return for a follow-up consultation to review your results and receive a personalized treatment plan
Whether your diagnosis involves obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, insomnia, periodic limb movement disorder, or something else — you’ll leave with a clear understanding and a path forward.
Who Needs a Level 1 Sleep Study?
A Level 1 Sleep Study is considered the gold standard for diagnosing complex sleep disorders. If you're experiencing persistent fatigue or have symptoms that may go beyond typical sleep apnea, a Level 1 study can provide a comprehensive look at your sleep health, helping to uncover underlying issues that other tests may miss.
If you’ve already tried a CPAP and still feel tired, or if your symptoms suggest more than just sleep apnea, you may need a Level 1 study.

Is It Covered by Alberta or NWT Health?
Yes. Physician consultations are covered by Alberta Health Services and NWT Health. Level 3 testing is no cost. Level 1 testing is private pay. Our team will guide you through what’s covered and any additional private insurance options that may apply.
Why Choose The Sleep Institute for Your Sleep Study?
We believe your sleep health deserves more than just a test — it deserves comprehensive medical care from day one.
