Comprehensive Sleep Insights From the Comfort of Home
A Level 2 sleep study, also called an unattended polysomnography, provides detailed monitoring with the same level of accuracy as a lab-based test. It measures brain activity, eye movement, heart function, oxygen levels, airflow, and muscle activity, all while you rest at home.
At The Sleep Institute, your care is never left solely in the hands of technicians. Every study is assessed, monitored, and followed up by a board-certified Sleep Physician. This ensures you receive accurate results and the right treatment recommendations, backed by medical expertise.

What Is a Level 2 Sleep Study?
A Level 2 study is a multi-channel sleep test conducted in your own home. It uses the same type of sensors and collects nearly the same data as a Level 1 in-lab study. It is especially helpful for:
- Diagnosing complex sleep apnea or comorbid disorders
- Patients who are unable to attend an overnight lab stay
- Individuals who need detailed data but prefer the comfort of sleeping at home

What’s Measured in a Level 2 Sleep Study?
A registered technologist will help set up the equipment, which captures:
- EEG (brain activity) to track sleep stages and arousals
- EOG (eye movements) and EMG (muscle activity)
- ECG (heart rhythm)
- Airflow through the nose and mouth
- Chest/abdominal effort belts to monitor breathing effort
- Oximeter to record oxygen saturation levels
- Additional sensors may track snoring, body position, or limb movement
Although the test is unattended, our team ensures full support with pre-instruction, remote check-ins, and direct access to technical help if needed.

After Your Study
Once your Level 2 sleep study is complete:
- The data is reviewed and scored by a qualified technologist
- Your Sleep Physician analyzes the findings and prepares a detailed diagnostic report
- You’ll have a follow-up consultation to discuss your results and review personalized treatment options
Depending on your diagnosis, you may begin a CPAP trial, start CBTi for insomnia, or be referred for further testing if needed.
Who Needs a Level 2 Sleep Study?
A Level 2 Sleep Study is ideal for patients who need more comprehensive monitoring than a basic home sleep apnea test, but who don’t necessarily require an overnight stay in a sleep lab.
If you're experiencing persistent fatigue, have symptoms that suggest more than just mild obstructive sleep apnea, or if a simpler home test didn’t give clear results, a Level 2 study may be the right next step. It can measure brain activity, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and more—all from the comfort of your own home.

Is It Covered by Alberta or NWT Health?
Level 2 Studies are private pay. Physician consultations and follow-up assessments— are covered by Alberta Health Services and NWT Health. Our team will walk you through what’s included and help with any private insurance claims, if needed.
